The utility of something is not always a straight-line relationship to the numbers. This shows an example of risk aversion, where a dollar of profit is a lot more valuable than a dollar of loss because of the risks undertaking a large investment.

At other times the best utility is in the middle of a range, like Goldilocks’ porridge, so you want the scale to show high scores in the middle and lower at the extremes.
